Jakarta - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) demonstrates its commitment to drive decarbonization in the maritime industry, encapsulating its profound commitment to safeguarding the Earth for future generations.

PIS Corporate Secretary, Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus explained that PIS continues to enhance decarbonization efforts both in business operations and other supporting activities. "These endeavors yield notable success, as the decarbonization data of PIS consistently shows significant progress each year," said Aryomekka on Tuesday (4/23).

In 2023, PIS successfully recorded a decrease in carbon emissions by 25,445 tons equivalent to CO2 (CO2e). This figure even surpassed the 54% target reduction in PIS emissions, which was around 11,659 tons equivalent to CO2.

"The carbon emissions in 2023 were also significantly reduced compared to the realization in 2022, which was at 6,866 tons equivalent to CO2, an increase of up to 270%," added Aryomekka.

Aryo emphasized that this achievement stemmed from the implementation of nine key steps organized into three categories: initiatives aimed at curbing CO2 emissions through Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mitigation, addressing Non-Greenhouse Gases to tackle non-carbon emissions, and reducing emissions via ecosystem preservation known as Nature and Ecosystem-Based Solutions (NEBS).

Measures to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) encompass several strategies, such as employing biofuel for PIS vessels, with half of the fleet already utilizing this eco-friendly option. Additionally, the adoption of dual-fuel technology for vessels like Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) contributes to environmental sustainability. Other initiatives include the installation of energy-saving devices and solar panels on vessels, improving operational efficiency, and adhering to certifications such as the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

Regarding non-greenhouse gas (Non-GHG) initiatives, actions have been taken to install ballast water treatment systems on over 70% of PIS vessels, aimed at preventing the transfer and spread of invasive aquatic species into destination waters. Additionally, scrubbers have been installed to filter ship exhaust gases, further enhancing environmental protection measures.

Another significant environmental endeavor involves the planting of 6,523 mangrove trees by PIS, extending beyond its operational areas and terminals as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) BerSEAnergi untuk Laut initiative," he noted.

Coinciding with Earth Day in April, PIS remains steadfast in its advocacy for its fleet to adopt new environmentally friendly technologies and operations aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.  Furthermore, the company is actively renewing its fleet, ensuring that new tankers comply with global regulations while also preserving the environment.
